What is Emotional Freedom Technique?

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a simple way of clearing imbalances created by thinking, attitudes, beliefs and memories that are not in harmony with our true selves. When our thoughts, feelings and memories are in harmony –we are at peace and we feel whole. Positive feelings, emotions can flourish and our relationships and creativity also flourish.

We collect memories, sayings, attitude and beliefs as we move through life from those who support and care for us, who we look up to and are key figures in our lives in addition to memories of key events that happen to us.  However, they do not always sit easily within us. Some become part of our external presentation of our persona and others sit in the background generating emotional responses and whispering phrases that often bring down our self-esteem.  Together they work to maintain the status quo.  Should we push against the setup we could find the resistances in the form of physical illness and pain or emotional barriers such as phobias.

Pain, physical disabilities and limitations and all our emotional response to them are messages that we are ready for change and direct us to the method of change.  As an occupational therapist I am comfortable and familiar with disability and disfigurement. As an EFT practitioner I am able to use the story of your pain and thoughts to help you untangle the message and clear it. As one on a spiritual journey myself I am willing to walk alongside you while you go through your journey.

There are many ways to self-discovery and self-healing. Emotional Freedom Technique sits alongside and supports the journey. Where blocking thought patterns, emotional blocks and physical pain is clearly in your path EFT can dissolve them thus clearing your path to a lighter and easier you.

It does not replace the spiritual work of personal self-discovery it is a support and an enabler.  The support structure of a faith community and regular personal spiritual practice are essential for developing healthy relationships and communities.

Will EFT hurt?

There is no pain in the process of applying EFT. However, for those new to energy techniques it may look and feel strange.  A series of 8-14 points are tapped in sequence.  These points are used in acupuncture and acupressure they are at the ends of significant meridians or channels f energy within our bodies.  When energy flows freely we stay healthy and when energy is disturbed or restricted there is pain or illness in some form. There is a simple sequence to cover the major points which takes a few seconds to complete.  While you do this it is essential you tune into the emotional/physical pain that is being addressed. The practitioner will guide you how to do this with setup phrases and reminder phrases.

There are situations where you may start with one theme and as that clears another emerges ready to be addressed.

When working alone our subconscious protects us and does not allow us to know about things it deems unsafe for us to manage.  Therefore to deal with these issues a therapist is required who can spot the mechanisms and support you through those and end the session in a safe and comfortable way.

How long are the EFT sessions?

The initial session can last from an hour to 2 hours so that a clear history and background can be established.  The subsequent sessions will last an hour and there will be practices for you to do in your own time between the sessions. Maximum of six sessions.

‘EFT is a powerful self-help method based on research showing that emotional trauma contributes greatly to disease. Clinical trials have shown that EFT is able to rapidly reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress. Once the distress is reduced or removed, the body can often rebalance itself, and accelerate healing. EFT uses elements of Cognitive Therapy and Exposure Therapy, and combines them with Acupressure, in the form of fingertip tapping on 12 acupuncture points. Over 20 clinical trials published in peer-reviewed medical and psychology journals have demonstrated that EFT is effective for phobias, anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, pain, and other problems. Some 10 million people worldwide have tried EFT, and EFT Universe is one of the most-visited alternative health sites on the web, with some 150,000 unique visitors each month, and some 200,000 newsletter subscribers. www.eftuniverse.com
